In November 2016, our CEO and founder Gill Nuttall happened to be watching a programme on serial killers….. (well, we all relax in different ways!)   The presenter of the programme was Piers Morgan and the month before, Piers had been involved in the launch of the Melanoma UK patient registry. As we launched the UK’s first melanoma patient digital registry, Morgan, along with many other ambassadors and supporters, took to Twitter and social media to encourage all patients to sign up to the registry.

As Gill watched the programme, she became aware of a blemish on Morgan’s neck, it was visible in camera shots and she was alerted to it. Given that she had already had had contact with Morgan, Gill decided to send him an email and alert him to the mark.  Piers said he was aware of it, but a few days before Christmas Gill received an email from him, letting her know that he had been to see a dermatologist who had arranged to have the mole removed immediately.

What happened next was a shock to us all!  Over the Christmas break Morgan wrote about it in his newspaper column and within hours, the story was doing the rounds of the internet.   Just after the Christmas break Gill received a call from the producers of Good Morning Britain, inviting her on the show.

On the 9 January, Gill appeared on GMB, along with the presenters and Jo Morgan, who herself is an Ocular Melanoma patient.  Between the two of them, they delivered a very compelling message in the importance of carrying out regular skin checks and undergoing proper eye examinations.
