Melanoma UK is delighted to announce the launch of a new free skin cancer early diagnosis course for Primary Care Practitioners.

During the pandemic we were able to work with and support GatewayC (www.gatewayc.org.uk) to develop a new Skin Cancer - Early Diagnosis course which is available to all healthcare professionals (HCPs).

The course will support HCPs to:

  • Understand what should be included in a dermatology history
  • Learn more about Melanoma and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer
  • Know how to accurately assess a skin lesion using a standardised approach
  • Increase knowledge and confidence in decision making around skin cancer referrals.

The course should only take approximately 1 hour to complete with a CPD certificate available on completion.

What is GatewayC?

GatewayC is a free online cancer education platform developed for primary care professionals across England.

The content has been developed by clinical and educational experts to assist primary care professionals. It supports the NHS agenda of improving early cancer diagnosis, increasing cancer survival, and enhancing patient experience.

The platform is fully funded by Health Education England and assists users to confidently identify, refer and support patients with symptoms on a suspected cancer pathway.

Their courses are designed by General Practitioners and education specialists in collaboration with leading clinical experts and patients affected by cancer.

Gateway C provides evidence-based interactive online courses, live and on-demand webinars, bite-sized investigative reports of key issues in cancer care, mind maps to help identify the correct cancer pathways and other useful resources supporting improved outcomes and faster cancer diagnosis standards.

GatewayC has been shown to:

  • Improve knowledge of cancer symptoms
  • Increase professionals’ confidence in decision-making, regarding when to and when not to refer a patient
  • Improve the quality of suspected cancer referrals, reducing delays in the system
  • Improve communication to enhance the patient experience and support patients at each stage of their cancer journey

All courses are accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners RCGP and follow NICE NG12 guidance.

How can you help?

We need to get this course in to the hands of as many GPs as possible. If you have a good relationship with your local GP practice, why not mention GatewayC and ask them to access the new Skin Cancer -Early Diagnosis Course.  It is Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Accredited which will make a difference.

If you can email your surgery that would be brilliant, however, we know a lot of surgeries are using e-consult now so this may not always be possible. If you would like to download the attached flyer and hand it into the surgery then click this link.

We need to do all we can to support our GPs and detect all forms of skin cancer early.

Thanks
