A new skin cancer treatment could be available within decade after major discovery about how melanoma spreads

A ground-breaking new drug that could stop skin cancer spreading could be available within 10 years after scientists made a key discovery about how the disease grows.

They say the drug has the potential to save thousands of lives every year in the UK and hope to begin clinical trials within the next seven years, if all goes well.

The researchers have found that a gene normally responsible for growing nerves also helps melanoma skin cancer cells to spread through tissues, a process known as metastasis. And they hope that new treatments can now be developed which can block the activity of the gene and stop the cancer from spreading.
